Almondsbury put on their Sunday best with eight-goal super show
Almondsbury 8 v Coalpit Heath 1
Monday, November 14, 2011 The Evening Post
ALMONDSBURY and Coalpit Heath met on a sunny Remembrance Sunday morning, and five goals from birthday boy and Star Man Jordan Bird helped the home side cruise to a much-needed victory.
Almondsbury started brightly and, after Jordan Pearce had stung the hands of Myles Jones and Bird had fired wide from close range, they took a 10th-minute lead.
After a long boot upfield from Almonds keeper Ben Clark, the visitors were only able to clear as far as Jake Lawrence, whose fine curling ball across the box was steered into the net by a sliding James Lewis.
Almondsbury continued to press, with Bird not quite able to apply a finish after Jones spilled Pearce's low cross. Owen Henson then got on the end of Bird's clever flick round the corner but, one-on-one with Jones, he sliced the ball wide of the target.
Coalpit could only hold on for so long as they endured attack after attack and Almondsbury doubled their lead on 15 minutes with a carbon-copy of the first goal.
A Coalpit goal-kick picked out Lawrence, who took a touch before delivering another curling ball to the back post where Lewis stretched out a leg to divert the ball into the top corner.
There was no respite for the Coalpit defence as Almondsbury continued to surge forward in attack, with Bird having two chances to find the net after a couple of great runs down the right wing from Pearce, whose pace was just too much for the Coalpit defenders.
Lewis spurned another good chance when he turned the ball over the bar from a Pearce cross.
Coalpit did manage to threaten the Almondsbury defence late on in the half but, after niftily avoiding a couple of challenges, Christopher Brown's poked ball across goal was too far in front of his team-mates and Clark collected comfortably.
Almondsbury didn't take their foot off the gas, though, and Floyd Curtis latched on to Lewis' lofted ball across goal, but Jones pulled off a fine save, pushing the ball behind for a corner.
The first half ended with Almondsbury firmly on top, with Pearce, Lewis, Bird and Henson looking very dangerous in attack. At the other ened, the visitors had struggled to find a way past Matthew Rowland, Avin Litt, Mitchell Iles and Cameron Borg in the Almondsbury defence.
Simon West forced a good save from Jones after just 40 seconds of the restart, before Bird struck the first of his goals, pouncing on the rebound from Borg's effort from distance.
Coalpit hit back immediately but Thomas Mould's effort lacked power and bounced harmlessly through to Clark. At the other end, Pearce and Bird both had chances in the next couple of minutes for Almondsbury, but Pearce fired wide and Jones held Bird's effort.
The inevitable fourth goal for Almondsbury came when Bird turned Lewis' low cross past Jones. And four soon became five when West showed great strength and skill to turn his man in the corner and deliver a cross, which was neatly flicked past Jones by Curtis, the ball clipping the near post on its way in.
However, straight from the restart, Coalpit clawed a goal back. The ball was poked through for Edward Mitchell, who initially got it stuck under his feet before managing to regain control and drive it low beyond the dive of Clark.
Almondsbury weren't phased by the setback and twice West forced Jones to push the ball for a corner, before Bird grabbed his hat-trick goal.
The striker won the ball on the edge of the opposition box and drove forward before smashing it past Jones and into the roof of the net.
Almondsbury didn't settle for 6-1, and Bird netted twice more in as many minutes. First, Borg weaved his way into the Coalpit penalty area where he was brought down under a heavy challenge, but referee Jack Smith played a good advantage as the ball fell to Bird.
The Coalpit defence stood still as Bird ran towards goal and, with two team-mates in support, he coolly slotted the ball past a helpless Jones.
Then Bird made it eight after latching on to a throw in. The striker initially lost the ball to a defender, but won it back and continued his run into the box where he slipped the ball past Jones and into the far corner, bringing his personal tally to five.
Almondsbury could conceivably have made double figures, but twice Henson squandered open goals from the edge of the six-yard box.
First, he fired over the bar after Jones parried West's shot, and then smashed the ball skywards after West flicked on Lawrence's cross.
